Contents : This presentation describes and illustrates the cytologic features of inflammatory reactions and tissue repair of the female genital tract and provides a microbiological classification of smears taken from the vagina. This objective is achieved with the aid of photomicrographs of the cultured cells. In this presentation the microbiological classification of vaginal smears is presented first. This classification includes Doderlein bacilli; mixed bacteria; cocci or coccoid bacteria; Corynebacterium vaginale; Leptothrix (Actinomycete and Lactobacillus); Trichomonads (with and without inflammatory cellular changes); Fungi including Candida albicans, (pseudomycelia and arthrospores), and Torulopsis glabrata; virus and virus-like infections including Herpes simplex, Cytomegalovirus, Condyloma acuminata, Molluscum contagiosum, and Trachoma; other microorganisms; and no microbiological classification possible because of scanty material. The frequency of these infections and the cytological features of each are described. The differential cellular characteristics of viral infections including Herpes simplex, adenovirus and cytomegalovirus are presented. The cytological features found during tissue repair are then described and illustrated.
